The Difference Between a Social Media Presence and a Social Media Strategy

Almost every company has a social media presence today. Far fewer have a plan behind it. A social media presence means your brand shows up, while a social media strategy explains why, for whom and to what end.

What a Social Media Presence Looks Like

A presence is an account, a logo and a posting habit. The team shares news, festival greetings and the occasional event photo. Everything is active, yet nothing is connected.

The signs are easy to spot. Posts follow whatever is available that week. Nobody can say which audience matters most. As a result, the feed fills up without building anything.

What a Social Media Strategy Adds

A strategy turns activity into direction. It names a goal, defines the audience and sets themes the brand will return to again and again. It also decides how success will be judged.

According to the Content Marketing Institute’s 2025 research, as cited by ZoomInfo, only 37% of B2B marketers have a documented content strategy, while another 38% work without one. In other words, many teams still publish on instinct. Those with a written plan hold a clear advantage.

The Key Differences Between Presence and Strategy

First, presence asks “what shall we post today?” Strategy asks “what do our buyers need to believe before they call us?” Second, presence measures likes, while strategy measures trust, enquiries and pipeline.

Third, presence reacts to trends. Strategy chooses which trends fit the brand and ignores the rest. Finally, presence depends on one busy person, whereas strategy gives the whole team a shared playbook.

How to Move From Social Media Presence to Strategy

Start with one clear goal, such as building authority or generating qualified leads. Next, write a short audience profile based on real buyer questions. Then choose three to five content themes where your experts hold real knowledge.

After that, agree on channels, roles and approval steps. Review results monthly and adjust. Explore sector examples across our industry publications, including pharma and packaging coverage.

Quick Test: Which One Do You Have?

Ask four questions. Can every team member state the goal? Do you know which audience you want to reach? Are your themes written down? Do you review results against the goal? If the answer is no to two or more, you likely have a presence, not a strategy.

Conclusion

A presence keeps your brand visible, but a strategy makes that visibility pay off. The shift needs no huge budget, only clear choices written down. Decide your goal, your audience and your themes, and your feed will start working for the business.
